Orthopaedic Surgery
Orthopaedic surgery is a speciality dealing with trauma (accidental injury), acquired (developed because of a condition) or congenital (born with) disorders of bones and their associated soft tissues, ligaments, nerves and muscles.
Most Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeons will see and operate on significant volumes of trauma surgery via their NHS Accident and Emergency Department, but many also have a specialist interest in elective (planned) orthopaedic surgery based on an interest in treating conditions associated with a specific body part.
Some surgeons, particularly those who establish themselves in centres of orthopaedic excellence, regional orthopaedic units and teaching hospitals tend to become highly specialised and renowned for practicing in one or two specific specialist areas of the body such as:- - Lower limb joint reconstruction
- Hip surgery
- Knee surgery
- Ankle and foot surgery
- Upper Limb surgery (shoulder & elbow)
- Upper limb surgery (hand)
- Sine surgery
- Bone tumour surgery
- Paediatric surgery (children)
- Rheumatoid surgery
- Complex trauma surgery
Typically surgeons who become highly specialised in any of these fields possess additional training qualifications and experience in their chosen field and are registered on the relevant GMC specialist register. www.gmc-uk.org
