Knee Pain Relief

What is a pain relieving Joint Injection?

A Joint injection is an injection of prescribed anti-inflammatory medication into a problem joint or a soft tissue space between a muscle and a bone. The purpose on an anti-inflammatory injection is to relieve debilitating pain and/or problematic inflammation.

When a joint or space is very inflamed and swollen this treatment can also involve the removal of any excess fluid that is contributing to the joints swelling before injecting any medication.

The procedure is usually quick and easy to perform with a sterile needle and syringe and the pain relief can be instant or a gradual. When successful, the length of pain relief experienced is entirely variable in each individual and ranges anywhere from a few weeks to many months.

Who can benefit from a pain relieving Injection?

Injections of Corticosteroid are the most common type of anti-inflammatory medication used during joint injection treatment, as this type of prescription drug is capable of treating a large range of conditions such as:

  • Arthritis
  • Gout
  • Rheumatism
  • Tendonitis
  • Bursitis
  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
  • Plantar Fasciitis.

Are there any risks associated with pain relieving Injection?

These injections are usually very safe; however, there is always the chance of unwanted side effects. These side effects include, tendon rupture, infection, loss of skin colour, and thinning of the skin at the injection site.

Although Joint Injections are very regularly performed without any complications occurring it is very important that all candidates are fully aware of both the benefits and risks of undertaking specialist pain relief procedures of this kind.

All treatments, no mater how expertly or carefully they are performed, carry risks and the importance of a full evaluation and consultation to discuss your condition in relation to these risks with an expert Consultant in pain relief treatments cannot be over emphasised.

What is the recovery like?

In most cases following treatment, you can expect fairly rapid pain relief and an improvement of your symptoms, although you may have some pain at the injection site for a day or two. This is a normal reaction to Corticosteroid injections and you can relieve this pain by holding ice on the area for 15 to 20 minutes at a time, several times a day. You can also take a recommended pain reliever.

All specialists can vary in their technique, but it is typical for patients to be provided with a support bandage to wear immediately after treatment and to be advised to rest and regularly elevate their affected joint for 48 hours following treatment.

How do I find out if I am a suitable candidate for a pain relieving Injection?

Surgical Advisor will be delighted to help you find a leading expert in pain relief treatment to consult with. Your Consultant will carry out a thorough evaluation of your condition and provide you with a comprehensive explanation of the most appropriate treatment solution.

Our Expert Consultants are most carefully selected and recommended because they understand the importance of the decision you are making when contemplating pain relieving injection treatment and because of their specialist expertise in this field. Throughout your consultation you will therefore be encouraged to ask as many questions as you wish and to take your time in making a decision to proceed with any recommended treatment.

To ensure that all patients are comfortable with any recommendations or advice given in their consultation, all patients are asked to go away after a consultation and think through all the information they have received. If for whatever reason you are still not sure about the best course of action and wish to have further dialogue with your surgeon, you will not be expected to pay for a second consultation appointment.
