Liposuction to Chin

What is a Liposuction procedure?

Liposuction is a specialist aesthetic (cosmetic) surgery procedure performed to permanently remove localised areas of excess fat. A fat removal procedure involves the removal of fat from just below the surface of the skin through suction keyhole surgery.

Fat removal techniques such as Liposuction are most suitable for the reduction or removal of stubborn areas of fat that have previously proved resistant to normal diet and exercise.  Liposuction is especially suitable for areas that remain out of proportion to the rest of the body shape irrespective of weight loss and this technique can work especially well in the area beneath the chin.

The ultimate objective of Chin Liposuction surgery is to produce a well contoured and permanently slimmer chin and jowl profile, without leaving any obviously visible scars. The aim of the surgeon using this technique is to create a new reduced chin and jowl shape that will complement and work in harmony with the other proportions of an individuals face.

This procedure can be performed singularly or in combination with other facial procedures such as a facelift or eye-bag removal.

Who will benefit from Chin Liposuction?

  • Middle aged and older men and women who develop a fatty chin and/or jowl area that will not respond to normal diet and exercise.
  • Younger men and women who inherit a familial fatty chin and jowl appearance, which they find undesirable.

How is Chin Liposuction performed?

A Liposuction procedure involves the surgical removal of surplus fat through a slender tube called a cannula. This cannula can be either connected to a large syringe or a special surgical vacuum device, through which, excess fat cells are carefully sucked away.  During the procedure the surgeon gradually reduces the fatty deposits of any problem area until the area resembles a proportionate and more normal contour.

Patients can be either fully anaesthetised (you will be asleep) or sedated (you will be awake, but drowsy and unable to feel anything) throughout this procedure. Liposuction to the chin and jowl area can take anywhere between 10 to 30 minutes to perform, dependant on the fullness of the problem area treated.  The type of anaesthetic chosen will usually determine whether a patient is treated as a day case or be required to stay in hospital overnight to recover.

Liposuction techniques vary between surgeons and according to the individual needs of each case.  However, most commonly, the surgeon injects the problem area with a clear solution that limits bleeding and bruising and numbs the area to be treated before starting to remove fat through a keyhole incision placed just beneath the chin, using a slim steel tube known as a suction cannula.

Following surgery the small keyhole incision site is either sutured together with a single stitch or closed with a simple sticky dressing. The chin area is then dressed in a firm support garment, which will be secured around the whole face to add pressure to the newly formed shape and assist with the early reduction of swelling and tissue healing.

What is the recovery like?

Whilst fat removal procedures are usually considered reasonably minor surgery, the operated area is usually tender and bruised for several weeks following surgery.  Analgesic tablets (pain killers) are always provided for any discomfort and patients are encouraged to stay as gently mobile as possible during their early recovery stage to help improve their circulation.  This in turn will help diminish residual swelling and bruising and aid to a more speedy recovery.

In the early days following discharge, patients are strongly advised to avoid any excessive level of activity that would put undue strain on the operated areas. In order to help the newly shaped fatty tissue and skin bond firmly together, patients are also advised to wear an elastic support garment wrapped around their chin and face during the day and night for one week and then for a minimum of another 4-6 weeks during the night.

Patients will be advised to take a specific amount of recovery time away from work, dependent on the type of job they perform, but it is usual to take least a week off to rest and recover at home.

Are there any risks associated with Chin Liposuction?

Risks such as bleeding, infection, delayed healing, uneven results, alteration in sensitivity and scarring will all be discussed openly at consultation, as well as the scrupulous efforts taken to manage and minimise these risks to their lowest possible potential.

Due to the additional healing and infection risks experienced with patients who smoke, smokers may be precluded from having surgery until they cease or substantially reduce their daily cigarette intake.

Although Liposuction is regularly performed without any complications, it is very important that all candidates are fully aware of both the benefits and risks of undertaking this type of specialist aesthetic surgery. All surgery, no mater how expertly or carefully it is performed, carries risks and the importance of a full evaluation and consultation to discuss your understanding and expectations in relation to these risks with an Expert Plastic Surgeon in Liposuction procedures cannot be over emphasised.
